Mr. Roman Ponos

Mr. Roman S. Ponos is the Vice President of IMPAQ’s International Development Division. He has more than 20 years of progressive, results-based management experience including global business development, project management, technical assistance, human resources, and overseas operations with donors such as USAID, MCC, and DFID.


Mr. Ponos is a dynamic, creative leader and hands-on manager with sound diplomatic and problem-solving skills gained through extensive international exposure working in highly complex, politically and economically challenging environments with demanding senior private and public sector clients and leaders. He has overseen the preparation, coordination, and partner negotiations for multi-million dollar procurements and has provided guidance, supervision, and mentoring to teams of proposal coordination, communications, and international recruitment professionals. 


As Deputy Chief of Party, he managed the compliance, finance and internal audit functions of a $23 million USAID economic development project focused on agribusiness, tourism, ICT, extractive industries, and livelihoods development in the Middle East. He provided strategic project planning, staff supervision, grant management, and was responsible for a highly successful, $5 million food security and livelihoods development sub-project which included the design, procurement, transportation, and installation of more than 1,000 agricultural units. Mr. Ponos has conducted onboarding, training, corporate mission and cultural orientation, has provided career counseling and organizational development at the corporate level and to partner organizations, and has opened project offices throughout Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, the Caribbean, East Africa, and Southern Africa.

Prior Experience

Prior to joining IMPAQ, Mr. Ponos served as Vice President at CARANA Corporation, an international economic development consulting firm and as a Regional Manager at Abt Associates Inc. He sits on the Boards of Creative Startups (formerly the Global Center for Cultural Entrepreneurship), GriffinWorx, and the Taras Shevchenko School of Ukrainian Studies in the Greater Washington Area.


Mr. Ponos earned an MBA in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management and a BA in International Affairs from The George Washington University.
