Project Updates

The NIH Common Fund Health Economics Program is launching the State Health Practice Database for Research (SHPDR). The SHPDR contains state-level data from 2010-2016 on health regulations and statutes to support health economics and health services research. Please join us for a webinar in October to learn more about the SHPDR dataset and how to access and use it. If you are interested in receiving information about the webinar, please send an email to helpdesk@shpdr.org.

Mousumi Sarkar recently returned from a site visit in Malawi for our U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) Closing the Child Labor Evidence Gap project. During her visit, she conducted cognitive interviews to test survey instruments for baseline data collection in two languages.

Publications & Presentations

Rekha Varghese, Monique Anthony-Akpotaire, Gavriella Frank, and Michelle Cantave’s poster “Evaluation of Health Howard’s Chronic Disease Care Coordination Program” has been accepted at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting. The meeting will take place in Denver, CO from October 29-November 2.

Today, Madeleine Levin and Vanessa Hoffman are presenting at the Rural School Nutrition Convening, hosted by the Pew Charitable Trusts in St. Louis. They are presenting our research findings on challenges, effective practices, and recommendations for improving rural school nutrition.

IMPAQ sponsored the National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilities’ (NASUAD) National Core Indicators-Aging and Disabilities (NCI-AD) dinner on August 29 in Washington, DC. During the dinner, Leanne Clark-Shirley and Alycia Steinberg joined state employees who were interested in NCI-AD, an initiative designed to support states’ interest in assessing the performance of their programs and delivery systems to improve services for older adults and individuals with physical disabilities.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, less than one percent of American children eat the federally recommended amount of fruit and vegetables daily. In a paper published in the August issue of the Journal of Economic Psychology, Sonam Gupta and University of Florida researchers studied the effect of “nudges” on children’s food choices. They found that students in the group that received nudges chose 51 percent more fruit, 29.7 percent more vegetables, and 37 percent more low-fat milk than the control group.

Good News @ IMPAQ

It’s that time of year again - and we don’t mean proposal season - time for the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk! 2016 will be the third year that IMPAQ participates in the Heart Walk, raising money to support AHA’s mission to fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies, and provide critical tools and information to save and improve lives. Check MyPAQ to find out how you can participate.

Congratulations to Labor and Human Services Senior Research Analyst Andrés Romualdo. Andrés recently received his Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification from the Project Management Academy.

IMPAQ On Site

This week, we are onsite at last week’s National Home and Community Based Services where IMPAQ’s health experts interacted with policymakers and program managers working to improve the lives of older adults and people with disabilities. Dan Kaplan was onsite asking attendees, "What’s next in home and community-based care?"
