U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF FUNDING FOR 2012 EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING ADMINISTRATION RESEARCH PAPERS PROGRAM
IMPAQ-SUPPORTED PROGRAM TO FUND ORIGINAL RESEARCH ON PUBLIC WORKFORCE SYSTEMS
February 27, 2013
WASHINGTON— The U.S. Department of Labor’s (USDOL) Employment and Training Administration (ETA) announced in a Training and Employment Notice (http://wdr.doleta.gov/directives/attach/TEN/TEN_22_12.pdf) on February 19, 2013 and USDOL News Brief (http://www.dol.gov/_sec/newsletter/2013/20130221.pdf) on February 21, 2013 the availability of approximately $80,000 in funding for the 2012 ETA Research Papers Program. The ETA Research Papers Program seeks to support original research conducted by Doctoral students on topics related to the public workforce system.
Through the Program, ETA plans to make approximately 10 awards on a competitive basis to Doctoral students to carry out policy relevant research on employment and training topics. However, research does not need to be limited to domestic labor programs or populations.
Selected topic areas of focus include:
Understanding Changing Labor Markets;
Identifying Effective Strategies;
Improving Workforce System Infrastructure;
Addressing the Needs of Special Populations;
Building Research Infrastructure and Support; and
Other related topics.
IMPAQ International, a Maryland-based research, evaluation and technical assistance firm, collaborated with the ETA to develop the program application requirements, application process, and evaluation criteria. IMPAQ will also assist ETA with the selection of awardees, and provide them with technical assistance during the program. On completion, IMPAQ will furnish ETA with a report on the program’s performance and suggested changes.
Dr. Steven Garasky, Vice President of IMPAQ’s Human Services Research Division, welcomed the announcement. “IMPAQ is proud of the role that we have played and will continue to play in this important program.”
Garasky noted that the ETA views this program as an effort both to build upon the evidence base of successful practices to connect workers with good jobs and career pathways, and to support rising researchers who are interested in this field.
“The goals of the program - helping researchers identify solutions that can increase employment opportunities for the unemployed, or enhance training programs for workers - align directly with IMPAQ’s mission of improving the lives of Americans,” he added
In its release, the ETA also encouraged prospective applicants to review the 2012 ETA Research Papers Program website, developed by IMPAQ, at www.ETAresearchpapersprogram.IMPAQINT.com. This website contains further details about the application submission process and other important procedures for this competition. The application deadline is March 15, 2013.
