IMPAQ worked with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) to improve the accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of its disability determination processes. These changes will benefit millions of applicants each year.

Our data-driven work supported the initiative in four areas:

  1. Case prioritization and eligibility,
  2. Adjudicator support,
  3. Quality and productivity, and
  4. Functional assessment.

We used a set of advanced data-related tools that included machine learning, data mining, natural language processing, and statistical modeling, as well as analytics tools that aligned well with the complex SSA data. The core project team consisted of two senior researchers with many years of experience in NIH and SSA projects, strong backgrounds in data science, and a deep familiarity with SSA data.
