Celebrating the Americans with Disabilities Act’s 26th Anniversary
The Americans with Disabilities Act
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is celebrating its 26th Anniversary on July 26, 2016.
The ADA seeks to improve the lives of people with disabilities by protecting their rights to have access to employment, public entities, transportation, public accommodations and commercial facilities, telecommunications, and more. The Act helps people with disabilities compete equally for employment and receive the accommodations and protection they need to work. In public and commercial spaces, the ADA requires accessible features and technologies, including curb cuts and closed captioning.
Working Toward Change
At IMPAQ and around the country, we are still working to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
Evaluating the Accessibility of the American Job Centers
We are currently evaluating the accessibility of American Job Centers (AJC) for people with disabilities for the U.S. Department of Labor. The purpose of this project is to develop information that will help improve the provision of services to people with disabilities. For this project, IMPAQ is measuring the physical, communications, and programmatic accessibility of the nation’s AJC system to people with disabilities. We will then conduct an exploratory assessment of the Ticket-to-Work program operation within workforce Employment Networks. This will provide preliminary information useful for future studies in this area.

Evaluating the Disability Employment Initiative
IMPAQ is also evaluating the Disability Employment Initiative (DEI), a joint effort by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy and Employment Training Administration to increase the meaningful employment of people with disabilities by facilitating and supporting system change in the public workforce system. IMPAQ, as part of the DEI evaluation team led by Social Dynamics LLC, has played a substantive role in creating the project work plan, developing site visit protocols, conducting site visits and telephone interviews, and analyzing qualitative data.
