In Conversation with Judith Heumann, Internationally Recognized Disability Rights Advocate

Each October, the Office of Disability Employment Policy at the U.S. Department of Labor sponsors National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This year’s theme is "Disability: Part of the Equity Equation."

In recognition of the month, and as part of AIR’s journey to becoming an inclusive workplace for all, we hosted a powerful conversation with disability rights advocate Judy Heumann on October 18, 2022. Check out her website and interview with Trevor Noah to learn more about Heumann, sometimes called the mother of the disability rights community.

Our moderated discussion with Judy included conversation about:

  • Judy’s own story, featured in “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution,” a 2020 Independent Spirit- and Peabody Award-winning documentary, produced by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama's production company, Higher Ground Productions;
  • Her 2020 memoir “Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist,” and its young adult version “Rolling Warrior”;
  • How organizations can develop a fully inclusive workplace for people with disabilities; and
  • Sharing AIR’s efforts toward building a disability community, internally and externally.
