A First Look at Post 9/11 GI Bill-Eligible Enlisted Veterans’ Outcomes

Join us Thursday, February 15 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. EST in exploring the findings of a comprehensive study on the Post-9/11 GI Bill – a significant federal investment in education. Between 2009 and 2019, about 2.7 million enlisted veterans were eligible for benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and taxpayers invested nearly $100 billion in the program. 

This research—a collaborative effort among the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the U.S. Census Bureau, and AIR—examines postsecondary enrollment, completion, and labor market outcomes for veterans eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The study covers enlisted individuals who separated from the military between Sept. 1, 2009, and June 30, 2018, and were age 65 or younger as of Dec. 31, 2019. 

The research team merged data from multiple agencies, including the VA, the National Student Clearinghouse, the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Manpower Data Center, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Internal Revenue Service. Using this data, the team was able to identify trends among enlisted veterans from all military branches. The study examines their use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, degree completion, and earnings. Notably, it simultaneously accounts for factors such as veterans’ military rank, military occupation, service in hostile war zones, and academic preparation at enlistment, as well as institution-level data about colleges.
