Scientific Evidence in Education (SEE) Forums to Host a Discussion on Transforming Low-Performing Schools
Washington, D.C. - The Scientific Evidence in Education (SEE) Forums, a project of the American Institutes for Research (AIR), will host a policy forum on Thursday, June 5, 2008 on “Fast Turnaround: Transforming Low-Performing Schools Into Successful Learning Environments.” The discussion will take place at the U.S. Capitol.
According to a recent estimate by the U.S. Department of Education, approximately 2,300 schools across the nation have failed to meet adequate yearly progress for five consecutive years. These schools require immediate attention and action to ensure that every child receives the high-quality education required for success in an increasingly complex economic and political environment.
The forum will use “Turning Around Chronically Low-Performing Schools,” a recent evidence-based practice guide issued by the Institute of Education Sciences, as a springboard to generate discussion on how to improve low-performing schools quickly. The conversation will highlight successes, challenges and recommendations to inform education policy and practice on the national, state and local levels.

SEE Forums offers events and resources based on scientific evidence that can be used to address pressing education issues. The Forums provide a common venue for policymakers, practitioners, and the research community to engage in important, evidence-informed policy discussions.
