INDONESIA - A team of IMPAQ technical experts evaluated the impact of the Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprise (SCORE) Working Time Demonstration to develop a better understanding of how work-life balance can be structured to most effectively meet worker needs and business demands. Collaborating with seven Indonesian firms, the IMPAQ team designed and conducted two pre-test/post-test surveys to compare results and measure changes of SCORE programming. Overall, we interviewed 62 managers and workers across the automotive, hospital equipment, garment manufacturing, and printing industries through two distinct rounds of surveys. In addition to quantitative assessment of wages, accidents, and absenteeism and other criteria, IMPAQ also measured the performance of the implemented working time adjustments within each local firm. Through this assessment, we identified infrastructural impediments to work hour changes and provided solutions to improving the sustainability of working time initiatives. Ultimately, IMPAQ built local capacity in conducting comprehensive impact analyses on modifications to working time and empowered the implementing partner to effect policies for improved worker happiness and industry productivity.
